Chinese for Science and Engineering is designed for first-year overseas
undergraduate students studying in China or professional Chinese learners at
the advanced stage of pre-university education, and it is a special textbook
for pre-university education of overseas students
sponsored by Chinese government scholarship.
The textbook consists of 15 chapters and 60 texts. Each chapter contains
six sections: warm-up, word learning, reading, listening and speaking, ability
expansion, and word advancement. The reading section includes one article each
of intensive reading, through-reading and skimming, and the listening and
speaking section includes one article.
Du Xiuping is the vice dean, professor and
doctoral director of the School of International Education of Tianjin
University, and the leader of the cross-cultural education discipline of the
School. He is mainly engaged in research in the fields of learning science,
Chinese international education and intercultural education. He serves as the
director of the Steering Committee of Pre-University Education Sponsored by
Chinese Government Scholarship, the vice president of Tianjin Chinese
International Education Research Association and other social part-time jobs.
He has published more than 40 academic papers. The Research on
Pre-University Foreigners Studying in China Sponsored by Chinese Government
Scholarship, edited by him, won the second prize of the Fifteenth Social
Science Outstanding Achievement Award of Tianjin, and the Illustrated Higher
Education System of Each Country, edited by him, won the second prize of
the Seventeenth Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award of Tianjin.
Yin
Xiaojing is the head of the Department of Chinese Language Education at the
School of International Education of Tianjin University, a postgraduate
supervisor and a full-time teacher of Chinese as a foreign language. Since
2001, she has been engaged in teaching and researching Chinese as a foreign
language, and has presided over and participated in a number of research
projects related to teaching. She has co-edited four Chinese as a Foreign
Language textbooks and one cultural textbook. She is also an expert in the
construction of the online series of courses of “China Panorama”. Her English
course “Chinese Culture” for international students was awarded the title of “Tianjin
Brand Course of English Teaching for Overseas Chinese Students”. Moreover, she
is the judge of the Third, Fourth and Fifth National Postgraduate Chinese
Education Microcourse Competition.
This book is a special textbook for
pre-university education of overseas students sponsored by Chinese government
scholarship, and it is one of the series of Starting Line—A Series of “Chinese +” Textbooks,
which has the following features:
(1) Bridged by
vocabulary. This book is in line with the “Standard for Pre-University
Education in China” and “Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for
International Chinese Language Education”, and it compiles basic vocabulary and
professional vocabulary of science and engineering Chinese, and absorbs a large
number of vocabulary of science and engineering Chinese in the pre-university
course, vocabulary of mathematics, physics and chemistry in the pre-university course,
and commonly used scientific and technological words in the classroom, so as to
assist the students in the transition from pre-university education to
undergraduate education.
(2) Aiming at improving comprehensive
language application skills. With reading as the main line, listening texts are
added, and exercises such as listening comprehension and writing in scientific
and engineering language styles are designed in a gradual manner, so as to
gradually cultivate students’ ability to independently read science and
engineering textbooks and understand science and engineering courses.
(3) Equipped with rich teaching resources. All chapters are equipped with PPT courseware, exercises and micro-lesson
videos, and online supplementary corpus of science and engineering Chinese is
provided.

Following the contemporary and interesting principles. With popular science
articles as the main line and scientific and technological topics as the
outline, this book combines traditional culture with the achievements of
contemporary courseware, and highlights the concept of combining language,
culture, and scientific and engineering knowledge.
It is suggested that students who have reached the
Level 2 of Chinese for Science and Engineering of the Standards for Pre-University
Education in China can study the whole content in 64 hours, and students
who have reached the Level 3 of that can study the whole content in 48 hours.
Institutions can also determine the number of teaching hours according to the
actual situation of students’ level and curriculum settings, and it is
recommended that the teaching hours of each chapter should be limited to 6
hours.
